The Truth about Moissanites…

There are a lot of misconceptions about Moissanites - one of which is that they are “the poor man’s diamond”.

It’s no secret that I absolutely adore this gemstone and I thought I would share a few facts with you to show you why, because no good decision was ever made in ignorance.

  1. Moissanites are cheaper than diamonds but they are not cheap. Yes, they cost less per carat but this is only because Moissanites today are predominantly (we’ll explain later) lab-grown, therefore they lack the usual cost of mining and shipping. However, that doesn’t automatically make them “cheap”. You will need to take things like the quality of the gemstone, the design of the ring, the metal used and any accompanying stones you may require into consideration.
  2. This is with reference to the “we’ll explain later” above and possibly my favourite fact. Not all Moissanites are lab-grown, in fact they originate from the stars. You heard me right! Moissanites come from stars!

Some fifty-odd thousand years ago a meteorite crashed down somewhere deep in the Arizona desert. Pieces of this meteorite could be found spread all across the Southwest leaving a beautiful glittering trail scattered throughout the arid desert. In 1893, Henri Moissan discovered these gems while studying the astronomical event. His discovery is now named in his honour.

So, not all Moissanites are cheaper than diamonds. There are very few of these valuable gems that derive from outer-space still around however, in order to be able to share the beauty of this miraculous discovery, scientists have recreated the mineral makeup of the original stones to cultivate these gems, making them accessible and a brilliant exact replica.

  1. Moissanites are both ethical and environmentally friendly. Being lab-grown, they lack the humanitarian and environmental concerns of mined Diamonds and, by purchasing a custom Moissanite piece that has been created and designed locally in your home country, you would be further cutting down your environmental impact.
  2. And last, but certainly not least, is the fact that Moissanites have a refractive index of between 2.65 – 2.69, which is higher than a diamond making them more brilliant and sparkly!

So, when it comes to making that all important decision, don’t discount Moissanites entirely, they truly tell the most beautiful story - a story from the stars!
