How to Care for Your Engagement Ring to Last Forever
Your engagement ring isn’t just any piece of jewellery, it’s a symbol of love, eternity, and something special to hopefully pass on one day. So, it’s worth giving it a little extra attention to keep it looking new.
1. Give It a Gentle Clean Every Now and Then
Your ring picks up oils, dirt, and creams. The good news is that they’re all removable. We sell Sparkle Wands online, which are the perfect, easy way to remove residue.
Other options include using a small, gentle paintbrush and cleaning it with very diluted Sunlight soap (I’m not a huge fan of this method since Sunlight is quite drying, but once in a while won’t hurt). Please do not use these methods on any soft stones like opals, emeralds, pearls, or turquoise.
2. Take It Off When You’re Getting Your Hands Dirty or Lifting Something Heavy
Whether you’re gardening, gyming, cooking, or doing a home project, it’s a good idea to pop your ring off. It saves it from scratches and accidental knocks.
I also recommend not swimming in pools with your rings as the chlorine isn't great for precious metal and can oxidize the colour making it dull or dark
3. Store It Somewhere Safe
When you’re not wearing your ring, keep it in a soft pouch or jewellery box, ideally separate from other pieces so it doesn’t get scratched.
4. Get It Checked by a Jeweller Every Now and Then
It might seem unnecessary but taking your ring in for a professional check once a year is a smart move. If you’re in KZN, we’d be happy to help, but many of our clients are scattered all over the world, so we’d gladly recommend someone local to you.
They’ll make sure the stones are secure, give it a thorough clean, polish it up, and spot any little repairs needed before they become big problems.
5. Insure Your Ring
-
Accidents happen: Rings can get lost, stolen, or damaged unexpectedly, maybe it slips off your finger during a busy day or gets scratched while gardening. Insurance helps cover the cost of replacement or repair.
-
Peace of mind: Knowing your ring is insured means you won’t be left heartbroken and out of pocket if something goes wrong.
-
It’s an investment: Engagement rings can be expensive, especially with diamonds or precious metals. Insurance safeguards your investment.
-
Covers more than just loss: Many insurance policies also cover damage, theft, or even mysterious disappearance.
-
Easy and affordable: Jewellery insurance is usually pretty affordable and gives you real confidence that your treasured ring is protected. I personally use OUTsurance
